Biography of Sir Edward Coley Burne-jones

Sir Edward Coley Burne-Jones was the main figure in the second generation of the British Pre-Raphaelite movement and worked closely with his lifelong friend the designer William Morris.

Burne-Jones was born in Birmingham the son of a gilder and frame maker, but his mother died only a few days after his birth and so his father raised him. He went to Oxford in 1853 where he met William Morris, with whom he shared rooms in London after leaving university.

Mainly self taught, although he did receive some lessons from Dante Gabriel Rossetti, the founder of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, Burne-Jones had been deeply influenced by Thomas Mallory’s Le Morte D’Arthur, and followed Arthurian themes and subjects all his life.

In addition to being the star of the new Aesthetic Movement following an exhibition of his paintings at the Grosvenor Gallery in 1877, he worked closely with Morris designing ceramic tiles, stained glass, and tapestry and stage costume.

He was Knighted in 1894 and died in June 1989, following which a memorial service was held for him at Westminster Abbey at the suggestion of the Prince of Wales. It was the first time an artist had been honoured in this way and reflected his fame and status at the time.

Long out of fashion in the art world it was only in the 1970’s that his work and the work of the other British Pre-Raphaelites became re-assessed and recognized for its talent and beauty.
