The Dutch Golden Age covers a period of about one hundred years from the beginning to the end of the 17th century when not only the art but also the trade and military influence of the Dutch was foremost in the world. This created the most powerful maritime and economic power of the period. As a result of this wealth created, Dutch painters like Johannes Vermeer and Rembrandt van Rijn found rich patrons and were able to paint knowing that their works would have buyers. Due to its concentration of wealth, Amsterdam was the largest artistic centre, and in the mid 1600’s it is estimated that over a million Dutch pictures were painted. Landscapes and portraits were the most popular paintings with the public, as well as genre and still life paintings.
