Very much an American genre, Pin-Up paintings were popular from the 1930's to the 1970's and the first Pin-Up oil paintings were known as cockpit art, as the pin-up girls, (usually famous Hollywood actresses,) were pinned up in the cockpit of a military aircraft in the Second World War period. One of the most widely known Pin Up painting artists is the American Gil Elvgren, who was a graphic artist at a prestigious advertising agency in Chicago. Most people recognize Gil Elvgren's name as synonymous with Pin-up art. He painted saucy calendar girls for a leading American publisher, and also worked for companies such as Coca-Cola and General Electric on their advertising campaigns.
