Rossetti was born in London and was the son of an Italian political refugee. He studied at the Royal Academy and for a time under the tutelage of Ford Madox Brown. His art is characterized by sensuality and a medieval style and is associated with romantic subjects and themes.
Rossetti’s paintings inspired several later British artists such as William Morris and Edward Burne-Jones. His involvement with William Morris led to the design company Morris &Co., which was at the center of the Arts and Crafts Movement.
Rossetti’s colorful style of portraiture became popular and was an influence on the Symbolist artists working in Europe at the time.
Rossetti’s wife, Elizabeth Siddal died after the still birth of their child and overdoses on laudanaum. Rossetti himself died at the age of 53 in 1882.
Famous Pre-Raphaelite paintings by Gabriel Dante Rossetti include The Day Dream 1880 and The Blue Silk Dress painted in 1868.
