16th and 17th century Flemish artist Jacob Jardaens is famous for his historical scenes, tapestries and portraits. He was the leading Baroque painter of his day after Peter Paul Rubens and Anthony van Dyke. Jardaens did not travel to Italy as his contemporaries did, but remained in the Antwerp area his entire life. Jacob Jardaens studied prints of the work of Titian and Caravaggio, but was also influenced by the works of local Flemish painters such as Peter Bruegel the Elder and his scenes of local peasant life. Jacob Jardaens is most famous for his religious works as well as scenes from mythology, such as his painting of Prometheus.
