Leonora Carrington British born Mexican artist who worked for the majority of her life in Mexico City. She was the last surviving member of the Surrealist Movement of the 1930’s. She attended the Chelsea School of Art in London, and became friends with Max Ernst. When Ernst was arrested by the Nazis, Carrington fled to Spain, and then to Lisbon. With the help of the Mexican Ambassador, she got passage to Mexico City. She lived for a time in New York in the 1960’s where her work had been made popular by an exhibition at the Paul Matisse Gallery. Carrington used horses in her paintings and, later, in her sculptures, as a recurring theme. She died in Mexico City aged 94.
