Oskar Kokoshka was a 20th century Austrian artist known for his Expressionist paintings of great intensity and detail. He was educated in Vienna having won a scholarship, and his first works were portraits of Viennese celebrities. He fled the Nazis and went to live in Scotland, where he began to paint in watercolor. He became a British Citizen after the war. Kokoshka returned to Austria in 1978 and then went to New York briefly, before returning to Europe to live in Switzerland, where he died in 1970.
