In this blog we discuss just a few of popular painting techniques and some of the most famous artists who used them.<\/p>\n

Using Oil Paints<\/h2>\n

Oil Painting on canvas is the preferred medium we use for all of our art reproductions.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0Our preferred brand of choice is Winsor and Newton oil paint, which is known for both its longevity and vibrancy.\u00a0 Of the many different mediums artists use, oil paints are the most versatile.\u00a0 Oil paints can be mixed with various oils and solvents so that the artist can generally change the characteristics of the paint.\u00a0\u00a0 Even watercolors can be emulated using oil paints, if mixed correctly.<\/p>\n

The history of oil painting<\/a> on canvas has evolved considerably since the late 15th<\/sup> century when it was first used.\u00a0\u00a0 Oil paint in tubes first came about in the mid-19th<\/sup> century and they transformed the way impressionist art movement artists<\/a> worked, enabling en plein air painting and the application of thicker paint across the canvas.<\/p>\n

Claude Monet<\/a> is one of the most famous impressionist artists and his en plein air, large oil paintings on canvas, Waterlilies 1916-1919<\/a>,\u00a0was only possible with the development of oil paints in tubes.<\/p>\n

Action Painting<\/h2>\n

Impasto technique is defined by the application of thick paint which creates a textured surface with visible brushstrokes.\u00a0 Derived from the Italian word \u201cpaste\u201d, impasto oil painting is used to create drama and it can be applied with either brush or palette knife.\u00a0\u00a0 The impasto technique was first used by 17th<\/sup> century Baroque artists such as Rembrandt and Diego Velazquez.<\/p>\n

Van Gogh Starry Night<\/p><\/div>\n

However, many of you will be more familiar with the Post Impressionist<\/a> \u00a0artist, Vincent van Gogh<\/a> and his use of thick impasto brushstrokes.\u00a0 Vincent van Gogh The Starry Night 1889<\/a> \u00a0is an impasto oil painting.<\/p>\n

Chiaroscuro Art<\/h2>\n

Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa<\/p><\/div>\n

Chiaroscuro painting is a technique which is used by artists to portray the contrast of light and dark<\/em>.\u00a0 Renaissance artist Leonardo da Vinci<\/a> is said to have first used Chiaroscuro, as illustrated in the Mona Lisa oil painting<\/a>.\u00a0 However it was Rembrandt, one of the Old Master Artists whose prodigious use of the Chiaroscuro technique is particularly well known.\u00a0\u00a0 In the most famous Rembrandt paintings , The Night Watch 1642<\/a> and Self-Portrait 1669<\/a> Chiaroscuro lighting is beautifully demonstrated.<\/p>\n

Craquelure<\/h2>\n

Derived from the French word craquel\u00e9, Craquelure and Craquelure varnish refers to the dense form of cracking which appears on the surface of oil paintings.\u00a0 This can be as a result of natural aging, as with the Jan Vermeer Girl with the Pearl Earring painting<\/a> which gives an excellent example of craquelure in old paintings.\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0However, replica paintings can also be applied with products such as Autentico\u00a0 Craquelure to induce and artificially age art reproductions.<\/p>\n

This technique was defined by the eccentric painter, James Abbot McNeill Whistler<\/a> and represents night scenes and \u00a0paintings which are painted at dusk without direct light.\u00a0 Whistler\u2019s oil painting Nocturne in Black and Gold 1874<\/a> and Frederick Remington\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0 famous old west paintings such the Stampede<\/a> \u00a0are both examples of Nocturne Painting techniques.<\/p>\n
