Baroque paintings & reproductions
The Baroque period (which is where Baroque paintings originated) started in Rome, Italy in the early 1600's, spreading to the rest of Europe in later decades. The word literally means rough pearl and was used in a critical way. However, in later centuries it was used to describe a period in both art and architecture which exhibited elaborate detail. This style of Baroque oil painting was very much encouraged by the Catholic Church, and many of the paintings of the period are religious. The most famous Baroque artists are Rembrandt, Rubens, Caravaggio and Velasquez. Rembrandt's celebrated painting The Night Watch painted in 1642 is displayed at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. This is a famous example of a Baroque oil painting.
