Cubism was an art and sculpture movement started in the early 1900’s by Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque. Other artists joined the movement in later years, most notably Fernand Leger and Juan Gris. Picasso and Braque had been influenced by the later works of Paul Cezanne at the end of the 1890’s. The Cubist style breaks down the subject of the painting into geometric forms, and is particularly distinctive. Although heavily criticized in Paris when first exhibited, Cubist paintings were very well received in New York in 1913 at the Armory Show, and then later in Boston and Chicago. Picasso’s Les Desmoiselles d’Avignon completed in 1907 is a large oil painting which depicts five naked prostitutes.
