Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider) was a group of Russian and German artists who formed a movement in Munich in 1911. The group included Wassily Kandinsky, after whose 1903 oil painting the name originates. August Macke, Franz Marc and Paul Klee amongst others were prominent members. The movement lasted only a few years, and the artists involved had many different styles but were united in wanting to express spiritualism and color in their work.
