The term Old Master is very broad and refers to any artist who painted in the period prior to 1800. Strictly speaking, an Old Master was a classically trained painter in his artists’ guild, although the expression has come to include works completed or painted by pupils as well as the Master himself. Art historians suggest that the term Old Master covers the period from the 14th century to the early 19th century. Famous Old Master painters are Michelangelo and of course the ever famous painting Mona Lisa also known as “La Gioconda”, Rembrandt whose iconic painting The Night Watch broke the tradition of military Portraits and Caravaggio recognized for his Chiaroscuro oil painting technique which utilizes contrast between light and dark creating a dramatic effect.
