Whilst the Symbolist movement began in France in 1886 the most famous Symbolist artist is probably Edward Munch, a Norwegian. His most well-known painting is The Scream of which he painted four versions. One of the two pastel versions was sold at auction in 2012 for $120 million, and was, at that time, the second most expensive work of art sold at an open auction. The Belgian artist James Ensor also painted in the Symbolist style and his oil on canvas painting “Christ’s entry into Brussels 1889” alludes to the rejection of Christ and the desire of society for luxury and opulence.
