In turn, Delcroix was inspired by the Romantic painting of Rubens, and in later life, by the paintings of John Constable which he saw on a visit to England.
Delacroix’s most famous work, Liberty Leading the People, was painted in 1830 acknowledged the French Revolution and the spirit of the people of Paris. This painting now hangs in the Louvre in France.
In later life, Delcroix’s paintings were inspired by visits to North Africa and his particular passion was to include animals in his many of his compositions, one such example being A Young Tiger Playing with its Mother 1830.
Eugene Delcroix was a prolific artist and over 9000 works have been attributed to him. Whilst this includes sketches, it is still an astonishing number.
