American portrait artist William Paxton was both a painter and teacher of art in his native Boston. He was a co-founder of the Guild of Boston Artists. He is best known for his portraits of 2 American presidents, Grover Cleveland and Calvin Coolidge. Born in Baltimore, Paxton’s family moved to Massachusetts and he went on to study in Paris at the Ecole Des Beaux Arts and the Academy Julian. Whilst visiting Europe Paxton was influenced by the work of Dutch painter Vermeer. He used Vermeer’s style, known as binocular vision, where the subject of the painting is in sharp focus and the background is blurred.
