Modern Art Paintings by Adolph Gottlieb
Adolph Gottlieb was born in New York in 1903. His parents were Jewish/Czech immigrants, and his father was a successful business owner. Gottlieb is known for his Abstract Expressionism paintings featuring geometric designs and symbols. Despite his father’s wish for his son to join the family business, Adolph Gottlieb dropped out of school and began his career as an artist. His Modern Art paintings are always popular and Famous painting reproductions.
He studied at the Arts Students League in New York and then traveled to Europe. Adolph Gottlieb lived in Paris for a period, visiting the Louvre daily and enjoying Renaissance oil paintings by artists Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, and Titian. Upon leaving Paris, he saw other parts of Europe, including Germany and Czechoslovakia. After living in the Arizona desert for almost a year, Gottlieb’s painting style changed, and he veered towards a purer form of abstraction in art. Many of these oil paintings were exhibited in New York, but his peers criticized his work as “too abstract.”
At The Arts Student League and Parsons School of Design, Gottlieb forged lifelong friendships with other famous artists, Milton Avery, Barnett Newman, and Mark Rothko. Adolph Gottlieb’s long and prolific career includes over 50 solo exhibitions, and his oil paintings were exhibited in many group exhibits. His famous paintings can be seen in art museums worldwide, including MoMA and the Guggenheim.
In 1970 Adolph Gottlieb suffered a stroke, leaving him with only the use of his right hand and arm. He died four years later but continued to paint until his death.
