Imagine owning Matisse oil paintings, or Matisse reproductions on canvas!
Andre Derain and Henri Matisse began the Fauvist movement and Matisse, along with Picasso, is regarded as one of the most significant and important artists of his generation. Matisse studied at the Academy Julian in Paris and was influenced by the landscapes of Nicholas Poussin and Antoine Watteau. He was introduced to the works of van Gogh and Impressionism by Australian artist John Peter Russell. Van Gogh had been a friend of Russell but was totally unknown as an artist at that time. Matisse was from a wealthy family and had a statue by Rodin, a painting by Gauguin and work by Cezanne hanging in his studio. Sergei Shchukin was a patron of Henri Matisse and it was for Schukin that he painted his now world famous painting La Dance (La Danse).
Matisse’s painting the Red room 1909, Open Window Collioure 1905 are two very well-known fauvism paintings by this popular artist.
