Who is Arnold Bockling?

Arnold Bocklin is a Swiss artist born in Basel, Switzerland, in 1827.  He gained recognition for his Symbolism paintings and active involvement with the Vienna Secession. The Vienna Secession Building showcased oil paintings by Bocklin, Klimt, and Moser in 1900.

Bockling was a Swiss artist born into a well-established family of silk merchants. His early personal life was complicated. His fiancee died, but in 1853, Bocklin married Angela Rosa Pasucci, and together, they had 14 children. Unfortunately, eight died, some in childhood and others before Arnold Bocklin died in 1901.

Arnold Bocklin Paintings

He studied in Dusseldorf, then went to Rome and Paris to study the art of the Old Masters. He was a famous artist in the 19th century. Many art movements, including Romanticism paintings by Caspar David Friedrich, influenced his paintings.

Arnold Bocklin's paintings include The Island of Life, painted in 1888, which resides at the Kuntmseum in Switzerland. There are three versions of Arnold Bocklin Isle of the Dead, one of which is also at the Kuntsmuseum.

Arnold Bocklin painted Summer Day 1881, an oil painting on canvas. This painting reflects his deep affection for Italian landscapes. Bocklin resided in Italy for an extended period.

The artist created two famous symbolism paintings. The Saint Louis Art Museum displays a painting called Venus Anadyomene 1872. The Alte Nationalgerie in Berlin possesses the other painting, Roger Freeing Angelica 1873.

When he moved to Munich in 1858, he became a Professor at the Academy of Fine Arts. Wealthy patrons paid for his paintings, making him even more famous as a highly desired artist.

Many believe that Arnold Bocklin's dreamlike paintings influenced Salvador Dali, the famous surrealist artist. Museums across Europe and the United States display his art. His art impacted a new generation of modern artists. 

His art continues to inspire and influence contemporary artists. Many people widely recognize him as one of Switzerland's most famous artists of the 19th century. 
The famous artist died in 1901 in Italy at 74.
