American artist Charles Ethan Porter known for his still life paintings. He was one of a very few African American professional artists of his day. Porter studied in New York at the National Academy of Design and his paintings were admired by the author Mark Twain, who encouraged him to live and work in Paris. Charles E Porter spent 3 years in Paris, both painting and studying, at the Academy Julian. He returned to America and set up a studio in New York, but after just 2 years returned to his home in Hartford, Connecticut, where he worked for the rest of his life. His work is now recognized as being some of the best fruit and flower still life paintings by any American artist.
