Eldzier Cortor. 20th century African-American artist who was influenced by both African art and the European Surrealists. Cortor was one of the first African American artists to use nude women as the central theme of his work. He gained inspiration from living with the Gullah people of the Sea Islands off the coast of Georgia and South Carolina, who were of African descent but were largely untouched by American white society and values.
