Othon Friesz. 20th century French painter and member of the Fauvist Movement, born in Le Havre. He met his lifelong friend and fauvist artist Raoul Dufy at school, and they studied together, firstly in Le Havre and then in Paris, where they met Henri Matisse. Friesz moved away from his early Fauvist style in the last 30 years of his life and moved back to the more sober and somber style that he had been taught as a student in Le Havre. He was influenced by Cezanne in terms of composition, use of color and simplicity. He is best known for his portraits, landscapes and still life work.
Port d’Anvers by Othon Friesz is a landscape painting which displays the strong bright colors associated with Fauvist oil paintings.
