After his studies at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Frits Van den Berghe joined an art colony in East Flanders, known as Latem, located in East Flanders. It was here that he met Gustave de Smet and together, they founded the Flemish Expressionist art movement. He is a multi-faceted artist known for his illustrations comic strip drawings, as well as oil paintings on canvas.
Van den Berghe's personal life was complicated. Although he married in 1907, his affair with Stella van de Weile disrupted both his family and career.
