One of the most important Italian painters of the 19th century, de Nittis blended the styles of Salon/traditional art and Impressionism. He studied in Florence before moving to Paris. De Nittis was invited to join the first Impressionist exhibition by Edgar Degas, and then went to London to take up painting in pastels, which he enjoyed and which became popularized by his paintings. He died suddenly at aged only 38. His paintings can be seen in Paris at the Musee d’Orsay, the British Museum in London, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
Landscape paintings by De Nittis of famous London landmarks include Westminster Bridge 1878 and The Victoria Embankment 1867.
