Who is Ivan Ivanovich Shishkin?

Born in January 1832 in the small town of Yelabuga, which was part of the Russian Empire. Shishkin’s father was a merchant who encouraged his son’s talent for drawing and painting.

Aged 12, Ivan Shishkin began his studies in Moscow under the tutelage of another Russian landscape artist, Karl Bryullov. Bryullov is an important figure in the history of Russian art, credited with bridging the gap between Neoclassicism to Romanticism paintings. He never married, and his life was devoted to his paintings and teaching at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture.

Shishkin painted over 520 landscape paintings during his lifetime, and people know him as a prolific Russian artist.
