19th century American trompe l’oeil artist John Frederick Peto was born in Philadelphia and studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. He moved to a small town in New Jersey, painting for the rest of his life in relative obscurity. He took odd jobs to make financial ends meet but was never seen as a serious artist. Peto’s style was to paint objects from everyday life to make them look real and three dimensional.
