John White Alexander is an American artist famous for his portrait paintings. He was born in Pennsylvania in 1856 and died in 1915 . Alexander was orphaned as a child and was given a home by Edward J Allen. It was here that Alexander painted oil painting portraits of many of the Allen family.
John White Alexander went to Munich and Paris to complete his formal training. For a time he worked with the German artist Frank Duveneck and together they visited Venice and became acquainted with James Abbott McNeill Whistler.
Alexander first exhibited at the 1893 Paris Salon and as a result, became a member of the Societe Nationale des Beaux-Arts. Alexander received many awards and honors during his lifetime and his oil paintings are exhibited in famous art museums both in Europe and the United States.
Famous portrait paintings include notable sitters such as Walt Whitman, Oliver Wendell Homes and R.A.L. Stevenson.
Repose by John White Alexander was painted in 1895 and is on display in The American Wing of The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
