Late 19th and early 20th century English neo Classical painter and follower of Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema. Godward used young women in his work as well as backgrounds of Classical architecture, marble and flowers. Even though Godward’s paintings were exhibited at the Royal Academy, he was disowned by his middle class family when he moved to Italy with one of his models.
John Godward’s paintings are widely admired and collected. One of his more famous works, Dolce far Niente 1904, is owned by Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber.
Godward’s paintings are romantic and evocative and many of his paintings of beautiful nude or semi-nude women who are reclining against a neo-classical background.
The Girl in Yellow Dress or Girl in Yellow Drapery 1901 is a particularly beautiful painting.
Museum quality oil reproductions by John Godward and other Neoclassicism artists are for sale and can be seen in our Classicism Oil Paintings catalogue.
