Mario Sironi was an Italian artist known for his heavy and dark Modernist paintings. Sironi was born in Sardinia He spent his early years in Rome, and met Gino Severini amongst other Italian artists of the age. He served in the army in the First World War after which he returned to painting. He was a supporter of Fascism, which meant that his paintings fell out of favor internationally, especially in America where he had exhibited previously.
