Michelangelo. High Renaissance Italian artist of the 16th century and one of the most famous artists and sculptors who has ever lived. Many of Michaelangelo’s paintings and sculptures are considered to be the greatest ever created. He is perhaps most famous for the sculpture, David, and his painting of the ceiling of the Sistine chapel, in the Vatican. Born in Tuscany, Michelangelo went to study in Florence and at only 14 was taken by the powerful Medici family to study in their Humanist academy. Most of his early work was sculpture, but he was commissioned by the newly appointed Pope, Julius II, to paint over 500 square meters of the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel which contains over 300 figures. This huge undertaking took 4 years to complete. His last great work was another mural also in the Sistine chapel, behind the altar, known as the Last Judgment. Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and Raphael, all contemporaries, are considered the greatest artists and sculptors of the Florentine High Renaissance.
The Creation of Adam forms part of the Sistine chapel ceiling and can now be purchased an art canvas replica.
Other motifs from the Sistine Chapel, including Michaelangelo’s Prophets and Sybils can be purchases as reproduction paintings.
