Nicolas de Stael was a Russian artist known for his abstract landscape paintings and use of heavy paint in a thick impasto technique. Born in St Petersburg, de Stael traveled extensively in Europe studying in Brussels, where he was sent to live with relatives when his parents died. He went to live in France, married, and had a studio near Georges Braque who became a close friend. He went to New York and had success in America with Duncan Phillips of the Phillips Collection buying several of his paintings. He took his own life in the South of France at only 41 years old, having painted over 100 works in his career.
