Sophie Gengembre Anderson is a French artist of Victorian paintings. She was born in France in 1823 and died in Falmouth, UK 1903. Her father was French, and her mother was English. Her oil paintings fall mainly with the Genre art movement and depict rural scenes of women and children. The family fled France for the United States at the time of the French Revolution and headed for Cincinnati in 1848. They returned to the UK in 1854 but whilst in America she exhibited some of her portrait paintings and landscape scenes.
In England, Sophie Gengembre Anderson exhibited her paintings at the Royal Academy of Arts. Her oil on canvas painting, Scheherazade, is a romantic painting that forms part of the permanent collection at the New Art Gallery in Walsall, Staffordshire.
Sophie Gengembre Anderson was the first living female artist to sell one of her paintings to a public collection. In 2008 one of her paintings, No Walk Today, was sold by Sotheby's for more than $1.25 million. In an era when female artists found it difficult to gain acceptance, Sophie Genegembre Anderson was a respected artist who gained recognition during her lifetime.
