Syvert Nicolaas Bastert was born in 1854 and died in 1939. He was born into a wealthy family and entered the National Academy of Fine Arts Museum in Amsterdam when he was 22.
The Dutch artist is better known simply as Nicolaas Bastert for his landscape paintings of the countryside surrounding the River Cecht. Syvert Nicolaas Bastert is associated with the Hague School art movement and studied under fellow artist August Allebe. Other leading artists of the Hague School art movement include Anton Mauve. Mauve's famous oil painting, Morning Ride on the Beach, is on display at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. Jozef Israel's oil painting on canvas, Children of the Sea, is also in the same museum.
Syvert Nicholaas Bastert received several gold medals for his oil paintings exhibited in the major capital cities of Europe, and he was as also an elected member of the Fine Arts Academy in Rotterdam.
