Learn more about Secessionist paintings and Secession artists
The Secessionist painters were artists from Europe who decided to separate themselves from mainstream art movements. The first secession artists were French, but the most famous group came from Vienna, headed by Gustav Klimt, in 1897. Some of the most popular secession art comes from this group which is known as the Vienna Secession art movement. The Secessionist Movement artists wanted to explore possibilities outside academic traditions, and Klimt, in particular, was interested in what became Art Nouveau, with his dramatic use of strong colors and gold and silver leaf in his paintings. Gustav Klimt's The Kiss gold leaf and oil on canvas secessionist painting of 1907 (also known as The "Lovers") was purchased by the Belvedere Museum even before it was completed and it is representative of Klimt's signature style.
