The Secessionists were artists from Europe who decided to separate themselves from mainstream art movements. The first artists were French, but the most famous group came from Vienna, headed by Gustav Klimt, in 1897. The Secessionist Movement artists wanted to explore possibilities outside academic traditions, and Klimt, in particular, was interested in what became Art Nouveau, with his dramatic use of strong colors and gold and silver leaf in his paintings. Gustav Klimt’s The Kiss gold leaf and oil on canvas painting of 1907 (also known as The “Lovers”) was purchased by the Belvedere Museum even before it was completed and is representative of Klimt’s signature style.
