Alphonse Mucha was a Czech born artist and illustrator who is best known for his very distinctive Art Nouveau style, and famous for his posters and lithographs of the actress Sarah Bernhardt.
Alfons Maria Mucha was born in 1860 in Moravia and died in Prague in 1939.
The Czech tennis player Ivan Lendl owns one of the largest collections of the works by this artist, which is heavily influenced by the Pre-Raphaelite movement.
His first job was as a theatrical scene painter but he later trained at the Academie Julien in Paris. His earliest and most famous poster is of that of Sarah Bernardt as Gismonda which resulted in Mucha being apppointed as her principal costume designer.
In addition to designing posters and lithographs, Mucha also designed jewelry, stained glass and many other products including stamps and banknotes.
Mucha visited the U.S. several times during his lifetime and for a few years he taught at the Artist Institute of Chicago.
