Whilst the Symbolist movement and symbolism oil paintings began in France in 1886 the most famous Symbolist artist associated with this genre is probably the Norwegian artist Edward Munch. His most famous symbolism oil painting is The Scream of which he painted four versions. One of the two pastel versions was sold at auction in 2012 for $120 million, and was, at that time, the second most expensive work of art sold at an open auction. This goes to explain the popularity of symbolism oil paintings. The Belgian artist James Ensor also painted in the Symbolist style symbolism paintings and his oil on canvas painting "Christ's entry into Brussels 1889" alludes to the rejection of Christ and the desire of society for luxury and opulence.
These paintings make wonderful gifts and we invite you to search through our range of symbolist reproduction paintings today.
