Bela Kadar is a Hungarian Jewish artist born in 1877 whose oil paintings are influenced by several art movements, including Der Blau Reiter, the Expressionist art movement, and Cubism. Many of his paintings depict peasant folklore and legends.
After traveling in Europe, Bela Kadar visited Berlin and Paris, and he reached the pinnacle of his career during the 1920s and 1930s. Kadar's paintings were first displayed in the Galerie Der Sturm in Berlin and have been exhibited in the Brooklyn Museum of Art.
Herwarth Walden founded the Sturm Gallery, a pivotal 20th-century center for German avant-garde artists. However, the Gallery closed in 1932 when the Nazis banned Degenerate Art, also known as Nazi Art. During its active period, the Sturm Gallery attracted some of the great art dealers of the time, including Solomon R. Guggenheim and Albert C. Barnes.
