John William Waterhouse was a British artist who worked in the Pre-Raphaelite style for many years even after the formal movement disbanded. Waterhouse was born in Italy but lived in London and studied at the Royal Academy of Art. He went on to teach at the St John’s Wood Art School and he is known to have painted 118 paintings during his lifetime. Paintings by Waterhouse are well collected, especially in the UK. The most famous painting by John William Waterhouse is the Lady Of Shallot, a scene from Alfred, Lord Tennyson’s poem of the same name.
