Russian-Jewish modernist painter, Marc Chagall trained first in St Petersburg and then in Paris, where he met Amedeo Modigliani and Chaim Soutine. Chagall was influenced by Daumier and Millet who are probably the most important French mid-19th century artists. Le Nabis painters and the Fauves movement artists also had a profound impact on his work, whilst Cubism, which was very fashionable in Paris during the early 1900’s can be seen in some of Chagall’s early paintings. When Chagall returned to Balarus,Russia to rejoin his wife,he became involved with the theatre, painting stage scenes and very large background murals for the recently formed State Jewish Chamber Theater. In 1923 Chagall left Moscow for France where he felt he could live more comfortably. He settled in the South of France and formed a business relationship with the Parisian art dealer Ambrose Vollard. The outbreak of war meant that Chagall’s Jewish faith forced him to flee from the Nazis in occupied France. He moved to New York. Chagall was a friend of Piet Mondrian and was represented by art dealer Pierre Matisse, son of Henri Matisse. Chagall’s work for the New York Ballet theater was greatly admired. After the War Chagall returned to France and to universal acclaim painted the ceiling of the Paris Opera. Chagall also designed stained glass windows for a university in Jerusalem, the United Nations Building in New York, the cathedral in Zurich, Chichester Cathedral in Sussex, UK and the church at Tudely in Sussex, the only church in the world to have all of its windows designed by Chagall. He died in the South of France in 1985.
