Maurice Denis was a member of the Symbolist and Nabis movements. He was born in Normandy to a wealthy family and went to Paris to study at the Academy Julian and Ecole Des Beaux-Arts. It was there that he met fellow Nabis painters Paul Serusier and Pierre Bonnard. Les Nabis artists influenced the work of later artists such as Henri Matisse, and Edouard Vuillard. After the Nabis split up, Denis focused his attention on religious subjects, and murals. He was one of the first artists to insist that the paint on a canvas should be flat, one of the basic views of Modernism.
