Palmer Hayden is known for his African American Art landscape paintings and depictions of African American life in the United States in the early 1900s. He also painted seascapes in both oils and watercolor.
Palmer Hayden came from a poor background in Virginia, but he worked at various menial jobs to fund his artistic ambitions. He joined the Army and was stationed in the Philippines with the Black contingent. Upon his return, he moved to Greenwich Village in New York and won a gold medal for a painting submitted to the Harmon Foundation. The prize money he won allowed him to visit Paris.
He is most famous for his series of 12 oil paintings about the Negro folk hero John Henry. Hayden is associated with the Harlem Renaissance art movement
