The Impressionist movement can be traced to Paris in the 1860’s where a group of four artists, Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Albert Sisley and Frederic Bazille were studying together. They shared a love of painting landscapes and contemporary life, rather than the previous tradition of historical and mythological scenes. They painted outside, en plein air, and their use of strong colors and depiction of sunlight are key features of the Impressionist style. The name Impressionism originated from Monet’s painting of the port of Le Havre, in 1872, named Impression, Sunrise. Some art critics of the time derided impressionist paintings as unfinished whilst it received praise from others for its representation of modern life.
