Frida Kahlo was a 20th century Mexican painter best known for her many self-portraits and as being the wife of fellow Mexican painter Diego Rivera. Kahlo’s work is described as surrealist with heavy influences of Mexican folk art. Frida Kahlo had hoped to become a doctor, but she suffered serious injuries in a bus crash which left her severely disabled. It was during her period of recovery that she began to paint.
Kahlo joined the Communist Party in 1927 and it was there that she met Diego Rivera, also a prominent Communist and the most famous artist in Mexico at the time.
When Rivera saw Kahlo’s paintings he was impressed and encouraged her to paint more. Kahlo is known to have painted at least 140 paintings and of these 55 are self-portraits.
Two very famous portrait paintings by Frida Kahlo are Self Portrait 1940 and Self Portrait in a Red Velvet Dress.
Kahlo’s art was not recognized for its true worth until many years after her death as she was known mainly as Diego Rivera’s wife, rather than as an artist in her own right. However, Kahlo’s paintings became known to a wider audience as books and plays were written about her and in 2002 the Movie Frida was released, giving her worldwide recognition.
Frida Kahlo died shortly after her 47th birthday. The cause of death has never been established and although there are reports of a pulmonary embolism, suicide was also rumored.
In 2006 her painting Roots sold for $5.6 million setting a record for any Latin American Artist.
