Max Ernst was a German artist and prime force in the Dada and Surrealist movements. Born near Cologne, Ernst enrolled at the University of Berlin and studied art. Ernst saw paintings by Picasso, van Gogh and Gauguin and was deeply influenced by them. Ernst’s painting was interrupted by the First World War where his friends August Macke and Franz Marc died. Upon his return from the War, Ernst met Paul Klee in Munich and in 1919 founded the Dada movement. Max Ernest then moved to Paris to paint murals and worked with Spanish painter Joan Miro for the Ballet Ruse. Art collector Peggy Guggenheim admired his work and purchased many of his paintings for her new Gallery in London. He married Dorothea Tanning and moved to Sedona Arizona, where he produced some well-known desert paintings and sculptures, achieving financial success.- https://www.reproduction-gallery.com/movement/surrealism/
