John Singer Sargent was a leading American 19th and 20th century portrait painter considered to be the best of his generation. John Singer Sargent was renowned for his famous paintings which include Portrait of Madame X, Carnation Lily Rose, El Jaleo and The Daughters of Edward Darley Boit. Sargent is estimated to have painted over 900 oil paintings and some 2000 watercolors during his lifetime. Sargent trained in Paris and lived in London for many years. As a young man he met and was inspired by Claude Monet, James McNeill Whistler and Edgar Degas. Sargent painted 2 American presidents; Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson. Wealthy Americans who wanted their portraits painted by Sargent would travel to London at their own expense just to sit for him. Sargent rapidly found himself out of fashion when Cubism and Impressionism became the favorites of collectors. However, in recent years his paintings have been rediscovered and are much sought after.
