Childe Hassam was a 19th and 20th century American Impressionist artist who was partly responsible for bringing the Impressionist movement from Europe to North America. Hassam worked with Mary Cassatt and John Henry Twachtman and was one of the most influential artists in American in the 20th century. Childe Hassam produced over 3000 paintings in his lifetime. He studied in Boston and then went on a study trip to Europe, visiting the UK, the Netherlands, France, Italy and Spain. He taught at the Cowes School of Art on the Isle of Wight and was influenced by the Barbizon School. Childe Hassam is most famous for his Flag series of paintings. In support of the American war effort, Hassam painted around 30 “Flag” series oil paintings during the years of the First World War. Childe Hassam’s most famous painting “The Avenue in the Rain” hangs in the White House and is usually displayed in the Oval Office.
