Louis Melendez is recognized as being the greatest Spanish still life painter of his age, although his work was not highly regarded during his lifetime. Melendez was born in Naples, Italy, and his father was also an artist who worked for the Royal Court. Melendez chose to update and modernize the style of previous still life artists by the use of light. He frequently spent as much time with the lighting and positioning his subjects as with the preparation of his painting palette.
Melendez still life paintings generally feature food and inanimate objects. The majority of oil paintings by Melendez are held by the Prado in Madrid but there are some examples in the National Gallery in London.
Still Life with Melon and Pears by Jean Metzinger was painted in 1970.
