Thomas Gainsborough. 18th century British artist who dominated portrait painting in the second half of the century. He was the founder of the Royal Academy. Born in Suffolk England Gainsborough went to study in London with William Hogarth. He married a daughter of the Duke of Beaufort and went to live in Bath, where he found a fashionable client base and then moved to work in London, living in Pall Mall, and painted portraits of the Royal Family and the aristocracy.
