Elisabeth Vigee Le Brun was also known as Madam Lebrun. She was a French portrait painter of the 19th century who came to adopt a Neoclassical style. Vigee Le Brun was a prolific portrait artist who is known to have painted some 660 portraits and over 200 landscape paintings. Madam Lebrun lived in Paris and became well connected at the French Royal Court as her step-father was a prominent jeweler. Her first patron was the wife of the Duke of Orleans and latterly Marie Antoinette, the wife of King Louis XVI of France. Le Brun painted over 30 portraits of the French Royal family in a six year period at Versailles. She fled the French Revolution to live and work in Rome, Vienna and St Petersburg where she painted portraits of the family of Catherine the Great. In 2016 the Metropolitan Museum in New York held a retrospective of her work, showing 80 paintings.
