Anthony Van Dyck was a 17th century Flemish Baroque portrait painter who is best known for his highly regarded and elaborate portraits of the member of the British Royal Court. His most famous paintings are of King Charles I.
Van Dyck’s influence was such that his style dominated English portrait painting for the next 150 years. He was born in Antwerp and his artistic prowess was very apparent at an early age. Van Dyck was apprenticed to the most famous European artist of the day, Peter Paul Rubens.
In England, Van Dyck was also influenced by the work of Titian whose paintings he saw in the collection of the Earl of Arundel. Van Dyke is thought to have painted at least 40 portraits of King Charles and another 30 of his Queen, Henrietta Maria. Van Dyke was knighted by the King, and granted British Citizenship. Twenty-six of his paintings are in the hands of The Royal Collection of the British Royal Family, the largest private art collection in the world.
The National Gallery in London, The Prado in Madrid and the Louvre in Paris hold a large number of Van Dyck’s portrait oil paintings.
