William Glackens was 19th and early 20th century American realist painter and known as a founder of the Ashcan School. The Ashcan School paintings depicted real life in the United States during the Great Depression period of the 1930’s. William Glackens helped the great American collector, Albert C Barnes with his choice of European Art. Barnes asked Glackens to buy him some paintings from up and coming European artists; Glackens returned with 20 paintings by Cezanne, Renoir, Matisse and Manet, which became the foundation of the Barnes Collection. William Glackens was born in Philadelphia to a wealthy family. He studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, with a particular interest in the paintings of the European Impressionists. Glackens traveled to Europe and studied in Paris before returning to New York where he worked as an illustrator for the New York Herald. Later in life Glackens moved to a more European Impressionist style and was called the American Renoir.
Chez Mouquin 1905 by William Glackens depicts a couple in the famous New York City restaurant of the period.
